How to Get to The Flutterby House

The Flutterby House is nestled in the charming Bahia neighborhood of Uvita, a peaceful town in Costa Ballena, Costa Rica, approximately 20 km south of Dominical. The closest regional airport is Quepos (Aeropuerto Internacional Mateo Hernández), but you will need a bus or taxi from there to reach us.

 

From San Jose

The most budget-friendly option is to take the bus from San Jose:

  • Public Collectivo Bus:
    Departs from just outside San Jose’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). This bus is economical but slower, taking about 6 hours with frequent stops along the way.

  • Semi-Private Tracopa Bus:
    Leaves from the Tracopa bus station in downtown San Jose. This direct service takes about 4 hours, offers air conditioning, and is more comfortable.

Private Transport

If you prefer a direct and hassle-free option, private shuttles or mini-buses are available to take you straight to the Flutterby House.

  • Private Shuttle:
    Costs range from $60 to $90 per person, depending on the provider and vehicle size.

Bus Directions

Coming from the North

Getting to The Flutterby House from San Jose

 

Via Jacó and Quepos (Collectivo) – Approx. $12

  • Departure Bus Station: Tracopa, San Jose

  • Bus Times: 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM

  • Travel Time: About 6 hours

  • Price: Around $12 per person

Take the collectivo bus heading through Jacó and Quepos. Stay on the bus as it passes through Uvita! The bus will turn right onto a paved road toward Playa Uvita. Get off at the first stop, the 4-corners and Flutterby bus stop. From there, follow signs to the Flutterby House.

 

Direct Route from San Jose – Approx. $18

  • Departure Bus Station: Tracopa, San Jose

  • Frequency: Buses leave throughout the day towards Uvita

  • Routes: Any bus heading to David, Ciudad Neily, Laurel, Golfito, or Paso Canoas via the Costanera Sur route will stop in Uvita

  • Travel Time: About 3½ to 5 hours

  • Price: Around $18 per person

  • Schedule: Check tracopacr.com for the latest bus times

Get off at the La Flor de Sabana restaurant stop in Uvita, where the bus will pause for a rest break. From there, you can catch a taxi or Uber near the BM supermarket for about 2,500 CRC (roughly $4) or enjoy a scenic walk of 30–45 minutes to the Flutterby House.

Coming from the South/Panama

Traveling from Paso Canoas (Costa Rica/Panama Border)

  • Bus Station: Tracopa, Paso Canoas

  • Departure Times: 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM

  • Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes

  • Price: Around $10–$12

 

The bus will stop at La Flor de Sabana restaurant in Uvita for a rest break. From there, you can continue your journey to The Flutterby House by taxi or on foot.

Driving Directions

Coming from San Jose Airport

Go South on CN 1 until you reach San Jose (about 15 minutes). You will pass the Crowne Plaza and Parque Sabana on your right. After you pass the park turn right before the McDonalds on to the CN 27 going west towards Jacó.

 

Go South on the paved Costanera Sur highway CN 34 that passes through the towns of Jacó and Quepos. After passing through Uvita take a right at the Playa Uvita sign, turn left at the first intersection and follow the signs to the Flutterby House.

Coming from San Isidro

Going south on CN-2 take a right at McDonald's and follow the street that will end at the road to Dominical. After 37 km/ 23 miles (about 45 minutes driving time), the road ends and you will have two choices: right toward Manuel Antonio, or left toward Domincal.

 

Take a LEFT towards Dominical on the Costenera Highway. From Dominical continue South on paved Costanera Sur highway until you pass through Uvita. Take a right at the Playa Uvita sign. Turn left at the first intersection and follow the signs to the Flutterby House.

Coming from the South/Panama

Get on the Costenera going North.  Before getting into the town of Uvita you will pass House of Ginger Chinese food on the right. Shortly after, turn left onto a paved road toward Playa Uvita. Turn left at the first intersection and follow the signs to the Flutterby House.
