THE FLUTTERBY HOUSE

The Flutterby House is located on a one-acre mature mango plantation;  just a five minute walk from the beach at the Marino Ballena National Park, in the burgeoning tourist destination town of Uvita. The Flutterby House is a beloved establishment in the southern zone of Costa Rica and has a well-established, ten-year-long reputation as the “social hub” of Uvita. It is the “go-to” place in town with the online reviews to prove it! Flutterby is a popular hangout for travelers, locals, and expats alike; it is a hostel, bar, restaurant, music venue, information center, surfer pit stop and yoga studio all in one.  

 

THE HOSTEL

The hostel portion of this business has 3 full apartments with private bathrooms and hot water, 2 private tree houses, 8 private cabins, 32 dorm beds and large camping areas to satisfy the tastes and budgets of travelers of every variety. We attract a fun and diverse mixture of guests and have created a jungle oasis where people looking to escape for awhile can meet fellow surfers, yogis, adventure-seekers, and nature-lovers from every corner of the globe. We care deeply about our planet and the local economy, and are proud to be an eco-friendly hostel down to the smallest details - with organic food providers, waste-free practices, chemical-free cleaning practices, compost area, and even chickens on the property!

 

THE RESTAURANT & BAR

The restaurant is well-known for its organic and international food. In addition to traditional fare you will find at a Costa Rican restaurant, the Flutterby also offers some of the only vegetarian and vegan options in the area, with a generous offering of smoothies, desserts and snacks. The bar is a locals’ favorite too, where friendly people of Uvita meet and interact with guests that are passing through. Throughout the years the bar has hosted weekly Locals’ Nights, Trivia Nights, Open Mic Nights, and during the busier seasons, the lounge area becomes a stage for live music and the epicenter for famous Flutterby themed parties! There is something for everybody at the Flutterby, but the best thing about this place is its ability to bring together a diverse mixture of people and allow them to feel at home and have a good time.

 

THE BEACH

Described by many as one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, southwestern Costa Rica has more beautiful beaches and fantastic vistas than you can imagine. Of its many spectacular beaches, Playa Uvita is among the most stunning on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast, and home to the famous “Whale Tail” sand and rock formation, which draws visitors from all over Costa Rica. This ethereal beach town is situated within the Marino Ballena National Park, where humpback whales migrate twice a year through the warm waters off the coast. Accessible throughout the year, with beautiful weather the majority of the time, Playa Uvita is a 2-mile cocoa sand beach known for its swimming, surfing, and other water sports. The most impressive feature of Playa Uvita is its beautiful landscape, with estuaries and mangroves, as well as its lovely local village atmosphere.

 

THE AREA 

In addition to surfing and enjoying the beach, guests can participate in horseback riding, snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving, or take a day trip to the nearby Cano Island and Corcovado National Park, hike to the jungle waterfalls in the surrounding mountain forests, go ATV riding, or simply enjoy the amazing sunset. It is not uncommon for repeat guests that come back, to run into an old friend they met the last time they were here. With the Envision Festival being the largest annual event in the area, a returning contingency of festival goers brings the town to life every February and is a welcome rush of customers for local businesses. With so many transportation options including direct buses to San Jose running multiple times per day, local buses up and down the coast, car rental services and regional airport forty minutes away, Uvita is incredibly accessible to travelers, and becomes more so each year.
